"Seven poor children" tells the history of the poor and socially disadvantaged in Denmark starting with a real-life family of seven kids who were children of a drunken war veteran from the 1864 war. With the life stories of the seven siblings as a leading storyline, the exhibition conveys a century of history of the lower classes in Denmark. The exhibition design combines film, authentic artefacts and graphic design into an impressive and emotionally touching experience for the guest.

Feedback

"Reconstructing the life stories of individuals who exist largely on the margins of society is an ongoing challenge for historians. In this regard, Seven Poor Children succeeds spectacularly. The exhibition not only brings to light the previously hidden lives of Hermann, Sophus, Carl, Harald, Fritz, Harriet, and Axel; it also furnishes the social and historical context for understanding poverty and social welfare in Denmark from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century through five interrelated themes: slums and poverty, orphanages, work and punishment, prostitution and sexual morality, and resistance."

The exhibition tells the story, among others, of how some of the brothers found themselves in jail. Here, a prisoner from Horsens State Prison, is walking in the closed courtyard.
